“The city above is the city we love.”
“The Greys provide so we survive.”
“The guard protects so we may serve.”
“The actions of ONE are the actions of ALL.”
“In Grey we trust . . . “
These are the words drilled into your head if you’re born into the lower class of Lantern City, a steampunk dystopia walled off from the outside world. The place has a very “Big Brother is watching you” vibe to it, and you can (and will be) punished harshly if you act so boldly as to step out of line. Even by doing something as simple as singing as you work.
It’s no wonder the main character, Sander, is reluctant when his brother-in-law tries to pull him into the rebellion. He has a family to consider, but it’s for this very reason that he knows things must change whether he is afraid or not.
With little time to even think about what he is doing, Sander is thrust into the rebellion headfirst as he infiltrates the Guard, posing as one of their own. Forced to think on his feet, he must learn quickly and stay one step ahead of his enemies if he hopes to keep not only himself, but also his family, alive.
So, let’s talk pros and cons.
The Pros:
- This hardcover beauty has some nice artwork and lovely extras at the end of the book about the world itself. I’m a sucker for worldbuilding so I thought this was pretty cool.
- A clear, solid plot with good narration and very easy to follow panels.
- The world is intriguing and leaves you curious and wanting to explore more of it.
The Cons:
- I couldn’t help but feel that Sander had too easy of a time infiltrating the Guard. Not only did he seamlessly (with the exception of one person who just wasn’t buying it) step into the shoes of another man, but it was a captain no less. A highly trained captain. Somehow, despite having no proper training, Sander breezes through just about any obstacle thrown his way.
- The characters didn’t really leave as much of an impact on me as I would have liked.
All in all I liked my first visit to the world of Lantern City, and I would check out volume 2 in the future. I’d give the start of this series 3.5 out of 5 stars.
Next up on my comic reading list? Volume 2 of DC Bombshells. I’m really excited to read it. How about you? Reading anything good lately? Let’s talk about it! 😀
Your blog makes me want to get into reading graphic novels!

Ah! That’s so exciting to hear. 😀 I love comics, so reading that put a huge smile on my face. There’s some really fantastic ones out there. I’ve really been digging a lot of the stuff from Image Comics lately. Sooo many great titles. 🙂

That’s awesome! A lot of my friends do comics too. I would love to get into them. I don’t know where to start TBH.

I’ve heard a lot of people say that ‘Saga’ is an excellent starter comic for people. I’ve yet to meet anyone who dislikes it, whether they’ve been reading comics all their lives or are new to this storytelling medium altogether. 🙂 It’s seriously amazing.
Saga is this great combination of science fiction & fantasy, action & romance, laughs & thrills. The 2 main characters are great, too. 🙂

Oh, I’ve heard of that one! That is a great suggestion! I think I’ll have to go order it for sure!

Just finished reading the latest issue of Wonder Woman: Rebirth, this is a fantastic series so far, literally the best WW series ever, the first trade collection is out (titled Wonder Woman: The Lies) I highly recommend it my friend. Looking forward to your review of Bombshells Vol 2, such an amazing series, I have just picked up the Bombshells Batwoman action figure… It’s the bomb!! 🙂

Oh, wow! That’s so awesome to hear. I haven’t gotten to check out any of the rebirth stuff yet! *sobs into pillow* lol
And thanks! I really can’t wait to read it. Also, loving that “bomb”shells pun there. 😉

That’s too bad that it leaves something to be desired (at least thus far) since I like grimdark novels, a grimdark comic would probably be pretty rad.

Yeah, I mean it was pretty good, I just think I’m just spoiled by some of the awesome characters I’ve read about in the past few years that really leave an impression with me. It’s kind of turned me into a character snob. 😛 I think you would like the overall world and everything though.

Considering I only fit comic books in here and there, I prefer to only read ones that you highly recommend. ❤

Aw, I’m honored! 😀 It’s the least I can do for all the good books you’ve pointed my way. ❤

You post some great reviews on Graphic novels! I love the sound of this too, especially because I’m trying to read more Steampunk. It’s sad that the characters aren’t that great but I must give this a try.
I read a Graphic Novel this morning, Username: Evie. Worst. Graphic. Novel. Ever. But I’ve also been reading The Amulet series (On book #6 right now) and I’m enjoying it.

Thank you so much! 🙂 I really appreciate that.
If you’re looking to get into more steampunk I would highly recommend checking out the Soulless managa series (there’s three in the complete series). It’s wonderful. I love the art, the characters are fantastic, and it’s so delightful. It’s like a paranormal steampunk bundle of awesomeness. lol I did a review on the series as a whole here if you’re interested in looking into it more:

Oh no, such a bummer about that awful-sounding graphic novel you read, Username: Evie. Thank goodness you’ve been able to enjoy the other one though. I’d never heard of the Amulet series before so I looked it up and it wound up right on my TBR list! 😀

OMG! This looks so amazing!! I still haven’t read much steampunk but love the idea of it and already love dystopian! I’ll definitely be checking this one out. Great review 😊

If you’re looking to read more steampunk, there’s a trilogy of manga called Soulless that is absolutely wonderful. It’s got a lot of paranormal fun in it and really great characters. I did a review on it a while back, so if you’re interested in reading more about that series, here’s a link:

It’s a lot of fun. 🙂

Funny you should mention the Souless series! I actually started it a few years ago, but I haven’t completed the series yet!

I only read the novels…I’ll probably get around to the manga before picking back up the novels.

Nice! I haven’t gotten to read the actual novels yet myself, but I’ve got the first book at home so I’ll have to rectify that soon! 😀
The art in the manga series is really nice. It’s a really fun series. I’m really curious to see the differences between the manga trilogy and the books. 🙂

Same here! I can’t wait to see the difference and look forward to seeing that art. I’ve been seeing the manga version around but wasn’t sure about it. Now I’ll be sure to pick it up next time ☺

Thank you for the review! My apologies for being MIA lately but April has been a busy month lol. I’m starting to get into comics (a little lol) and I have a few that I have purchased waiting on my bookshelf. One is the Scooby Doo Apocalypse one, one is Saga (Thanks for the recommendation lol) and then I have a few X men, Avengers and a girly comic that I picked up last weekend from the Comic Convention. I’m excited to delve in! Have a great weekend!

I really cannot wait to hear what you think of Saga when you read it. It’s so fantastic. I can’t wait to get around to reading more of it. 😀
What girly comic did you wind up getting? 🙂
