Coulrophobia: a lengthy word that refers to the fear of clowns.

Hey, guys! ❤ Since tonight is the premier of season 7 of American Horror Story AND this Friday is when the new film adaptation of Stephen King’s It hits theaters, it seems an appropriate time to talk about clowns and how they scare the hell out of so many of us. Plus, Halloween is fast approaching, and I’m sure we’ll have many a spooky thing to discuss in the weeks to come. 😀

Despite the many phobias I myself have, clowns are not really much of an issue for me these days. Same with dolls and ventriloquist dummies and whatnot. I know they tend to freak most people out, but I tend to be fairly indifferent to them thankfully. This, however, was not the case when I was but a wee Ignited Moth. I was very afraid of clowns. I remember going to the Fox Theatre in Detroit with my grandma in the winter and it would be so dark out and the sewer-grates would have creepy steam rising from them. I was always convinced Pennywise was down there and that he was just waiting to snatch us up.

I also have an aunt who used to keep this creepy-ass clown doll in the back seat of her car when I was younger. The thing had a mini baseball bat (no doubt for beating children to death with, because why else would a clown need a baseball bat?) But that’s about it. I never really had that lingering fear of clowns that so many people I know still do. I’m thankful for that though, because I have plenty of my own fears to keep me on edge. 😛

So, how about you? Do you (or have you ever) had a phobia of clowns? Do you remember what caused it? I’m just curious. No worries, I won’t be sending any clowns to your door or anything like that. Just wondering is all. 😉

Also, are you planning on going to see the new It movie when it opens? Or are you gonna watch this season of AHS? They’ve been teasing the hell out of clowns for this season, so that should be interesting. I know it’s supposed to have to do with this past election as well (now there’s a real horror show if I’ve ever seen one). 😛

  1. I was so freaked out and then seeing the banana spider freaked me out even more. Yikes! I have arachnophobia, no joke.

    We used to have this restaurant that had a clown named Snickers that would come on Saturdays. He always freaked me out. For me, I think it started with Poltergeist. That clown! Ugh! ❤ I'm still going to see "It" for sure.

    1. Haha same here, actually! Spiders are definitely up there as one of my biggest fears. My fear of heights is even worse though. Yeah, those banana spiders are terrifying. I seriously think about them every single time I shop for bananas. (Same with black widows when I’m buying grapes.)
      Poltergeist is a very good reason to be freaked out by clowns! I totally forgot about that creepy clown doll when I made this post. lol It really was creepy though!
      Let me know what you think of It when you see it. 🙂 I went this weekend and I really enjoyed it. It had good scares AND good laughs in my opinion. It was definitely a fun movie worth watching. 😀

  3. Oooo I’m looking forward to checking the new It out!!
    Must admit I don’t think I’ve ever really had a fear thing for clowns. I can find them creepy, but it’s nothing overly scary. I can see others people do get coulrophobia though.x

    1. Yeah, I hope you get to check it out while it’s in theaters. It was really good. I went this weekend and I really enjoyed it. It had a really healthy dose of humor to it as well which I really liked. The kids in it did a great job acting in their roles for the funny parts and the scary parts. Very talented young actors in my opinion. 🙂

  6. I don’t really have a fear of clowns that’s irrational. I think it only comes out in context. If I’m out at night and a clown comes at me, I’ll probably run. If I’m at the fair and there’s a clown making balloon animals, I’m good. 😀

    I’m totally seeing IT on Thursday at midnight. I’m even being a bad mommy and letting my daughter miss school on Friday so we can all do it together. We’re super exicted.

    You mention the Fox theater in Detroit. First, I know the steam out of the sewers and I always used to think the same thing! Second, makes me wonder if we’re in neighboring cities!

    1. lol I agree. I think I’d run too if anyone came running at me at night, clown or not. 😛 It’s definitely all about context when it comes to “scary” clowns.
      I’m so jealous you got to see the midnight premier for It. I bet it was a lot of fun. And you definitely have won all the Cool Mom points for letting your daughter go too. 😀
      And wow, talk about a “small world”. Yeah, we just might be nearby one another. I’ve bounced around Michigan here and there, but am currently living in Waterford. 🙂 I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one that got creeped out by those steaming sewers near the Fox Theatre at night. 😛

      1. Watching it in the middle of the night was super fun, although it turned out my movie theater was playing it all evening that day, so I could have seen it at 5 and slept… which I may have done. 🙂

        The Detroit steamy sewers were definitely the worst, but I even think of IT when I see steamy sewers anywhere. It happens where I live too, in the smaller grates. (I’m in Ypsilanti.)
