Happy Earth Day + Garden Haul + Garter Snake Pics

Yay! Not only does it finally feel like spring here in Michigan, but it’s also Earth Day! 🙂 It was the perfect day to get outside, enjoy some fresh air, and start planning for this year’s gardening.

After an absolutely fabulous margarita-drag queen-and-true crime-filled start to the weekend with Cupcakes and Machetes, today was a laid back, lazy day mostly spent outside. I went out with my mom to a fantastic garden center and nursery that was having some really good sales. Here’s some pics from my little plant haul:

There are some yummy salads in my future. 😛

Strawberries in the making!

I didn’t get a pic of the cherry bush I bought my mom as an early Mother’s Day gift, but she was really excited about it. 🙂 The place we went to was wonderful and I wanted to buy all the things. (Especially with all the great deals they had going on.)

I hope everyone is having an amazing Earth Day and that the weather where you’re at allows you to get out and fully enjoy the great outdoors. ❤ Considering it was about a week ago that I had to literally chisel my way into my car because it was completely covered in a thick layer of ice, I was more than ready for some nice weather like this.

Aaaand here’s some cute little garter snake buddies I crossed paths with while out and about today.

  1. I’ve never heard of Earth day. Where I used to live we used to have a “Red Earth” festival which was to celebrate the original Aboriginal folk that settled there. There’d be cake and craft stalls as well as rides. I remember going on a ride called the “Gravatron” which was shaped like a UFO and spun really fast. I threw up all of myself haha. Good times. It could have been due to the hot dogs and beer I consumed I guess. Well done on the plant haul. I love Basil and for my VIP clients I leave a little terracotta pot with basil in it at their doorstep. I like snakes and see a lot of them in my line of work. Your Garter ones are cute.

    1. Omg I looove the Gravatron! Haha It’s one of the only rides I’m not too scared to go on. 😛 I don’t do heights or anything that flings you around upside down.
Aw, that’s really sweet that you leave basil for your good clients. I bet they love that. 🙂 I agree, garter snakes are really adorable. They’re so mellow and non-threatening but a lot of people seem to still be scared of them. They only spook me when I’m not expecting them and nearly step on them. 😛

      1. Haha nice. 😛 I, on the other hand, am afraid of like a thousand things. I do try to push myself past my fears though, so at least there’s that, I suppose. 🙂

      2. I was getting all settled into the new house and we had a lot of work and painting to do to it before that. And adjusting to the new job and packing and all those other boring adult things of that nature. Haha 😛

      3. Ahh I see. I refuse to grow up but I do have to do grown up things hehe. I remember my Ex telling me once that I need to grow up and I very defiantly declared never!!!!! I think my child-like ways help me be a better Dad and a happier person in general. However adult things are necssary to keep on top of life. If I had my way it’d be M&M’s and banana pancakes for diner every day haha.

      4. Haha I like your style. Especially the part about banana pancakes. 😛 I just tried making a strawberry-banana cake earlier this evening and it ended up going right in the garbage can. I don’t know what the hell happened, but it just tasted AWFUL. I don’t think I’ve ever had that bad of a baking fail in my life. So sad, too, because it sounded sooo good at the time.
Yeah, growing up is for suckers. I do adult things because ya know, bills and whatnot, but I never want to be a boring-ass adult with no hobbies or passions in life. Like you said, it makes for a happier life in general, and I can totally see how it would help make you a better parent, too. 🙂

      5. That’s what I was wondering! Maybe it was an issue with those particular bananas or something because it was just the weirdest thing. Such a letdown.
Haha I do have to wonder how you managed to burn Doritos. Certainly sounds like an interesting turn of events. 😛 I think my biggest cooking failure will always be “the zombie hashbrown incident”. I was young and didn’t know you should soak potatoes in cool water after you shred or cut them and what transpired were these horrid sludgy grey hashbrowns that were dubbed “zombie hashbrowns” because of the creepy color and consistency. 😛 (And the brains mixed in, but that’s a story for another day.) 😉

  2. OMG, i’m so terrified of snakes (as well!!), if i saw those ones in real life, i’d probably pass out or something… 😀

Love the flowers tho! I wish i had a garden…. Although if it comes with snakes, then maybe not.

    1. Haha I would say they’re harmless little guys, but I’m the same way about spiders so I understand the feeling. I saw a spider in my classroom today that was missing several legs and I was still terrified of it. 😛

  3. Looks like you had an awesome Earth Day! Plants! I’m so excited for you. Hope you enjoy those future salads. I personally can’t wait. 💖💜💖 Great post and the snake is beautiful!

      1. Store lettuce is usually more bitter than the homegrown while is usually just light and delicious. Of course NOW we have this huge lettuce recall so I’m very wary about it and have been using carrots for my 5-7 veggies a day 😀

      2. Yeah, that massive recall has had me paranoid, too. I miss getting my cabbage/romaine blend salads from the store! D:
I did use some of this year’s homegrown leaf lettuce I’ve been growing though to make today’s salad, and that was pretty rewarding (and delicious!) 🙂
Yum, carrots are good, too. I love carrots. Raw or cooked, doesn’t matter. I just had some steamed broccoli and cauliflower with dinner, but I was wishing I had some carrots to go with it. Veggies are just so good. 😀

      3. I think there was another recall of something. It’s scary because my BFF told me her friend lost her daughter due to E. coli possibly contracted because of it. It’s like you hear about recalls and you’re careful as you should be, but when you hear about someone actually dying ESPECIALLY a child, it really shakes and saddens you. Like I can’t even imagine. We’ve been doing carrots and broccoli since, because I like taking them for something to snack on at work. I was never as into cauliflower, BUT I know you can use it as a potato substitute in mashed “potatoes,” and it’s pretty decent. I would literally run someone over for some Brussel sprouts.

      4. Omg that’s so terrible! How sad. 😦 (and scary!)
I agree, B-Sprouts are where it’s at. ❤ ❤ ❤ They're just so dang good! I've never tried making the cauliflower "mashed potatoes" before, but I've heard its good. That and cauliflower "pizza crusts". 🙂
