The Return to the Sketchbook

After some neglect, I finally brushed off my sketchbook and have been showing it a little love again. I figured I’d share some of my recent illustration-sketch thingies with you guys. 🙂 Here are my 3 latest pieces, all done with watercolor markers and sharpies. Some of you may have already seen them over on Instagram but I figured I’d share them here anyway. ❤

Not my usual color palette, but hey, it’s fun to tinker around with different colors from time to time. Yellow was a bold jump out of my comfort zone.

This one was kind of inspired by the dead twins in The Shining, but I was listening to The Birthday Massacre, hence the bunny mask. This one was just a quickie since I felt I needed to push myself that day to practice more. I wish I’d taken my time with it more, but hey, that’s what re-draws are for, right? 😉

Just did this one tonight. Was wanting to do a creepy spin on those cute poses couples do for photos so I thought it’d be fun to have a girl covering the guy’s eyes with bloody claw hands while he’s obliviously unaware he’s about to be dinner.

Hopefully there will be more of these art posts. Shark Week is coming up so I’d love to do some Shark illustrations soon, like last year’s whale shark drawing I did. Definitely need to buy some new watercolor markers soon. My poor little babies are drying up!! D:

Anywayyy, hope you guys enjoyed the drawings. What creative stuff have you been up to lately? 🙂 I’d love to chat about it!

  1. Wow – really nice work on all three. The yellow really works on the top one, and doesn’t detract from the “goth” feel at all – which is something to be said that you’ve pulled it off. Have you done any professional illustration work?

There are a few aspiring writers around in these circles. Perhaps some sort of online serial-story collaboration(s) couldbe in the future? Not nessecarily panel-by-panel comic-style stories, but similar to the graphic novel I just reviewed in terms of art-writing.

    1. Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback and I’m glad the yellow worked with the aesthetic I was going for. I had to take a deep breath before actually putting the marker to paper. Kind of a “well, there’s no going back now” kind of moment I didn’t have to worry about as much when I was doing digital illustrations. 😛
And yes, actually, I used to sell art commissions back in the olden days of Myspace. lmao I feel like I’m really dating myself with that sentence. Haha
I have actually toyed around with the idea of doing my own graphic novel and used to make comics all the time just for fun, but right now I think I think I’m just too bombarded with other stuff for that any time soon. Any scraps of free time I try to get some writing in, but even that’s been hard unfortunately. We’ll see, though! 🙂 You never know! Thanks again for the wonderful feedback. It means a lot and definitely helps fuel the fire to keep at it. ^_^

      1. Welcome and well deserved. No issue with dating yourself – I’ve just finished abunch of goblins from 1993! 😉
Maybe the graphic novel project could be something that’s a “slow burn” kinda thing that you break out once in a while. I’m sure it would be a worthwhile use of your time when you have a chance, as well as a nice focused bit of creativity. 🙂

  2. As always these are fantastic! especially love the bunny girl based upon those creepy twins (strangely I just watched Ready Player One again last night and my favourite part is The Shining scene… brilliant!) keep up the great work my friend. 🙂

    1. Thank you so much! 😀 I’m so glad you like the bunny girl. I wasn’t even sure if I was even going to share that one so I’m glad to hear she wasn’t a flop. 🙂 Now that you mention it, I should really re-watch Ready Player One. I feel like it’s the kind of movie you could watch a few times and keep noticing cool new references. Thanks again!!

  3. Gorgeous work IM, particularly on that first illustration (sketch thingy) 😉
The yellow works beautifully with the cool blues and greens on that top one, while the others are amusing and chilling in equal measure – 2 has got sass, and 3 is cute-but-terrifying 🙂
You are so talented – I really am in awe of people that can draw/sketch/paint etc in 2D, and I love your stuff… More please!!

    1. Aw, thank you very much! ^_^ I’m so relieved that the yellow worked out in the first piece. Yellow was a big gamble for me so I’m glad to hear it paid off. 🙂
Haha and cute-but-terrifying is one of my favorite aesthetics, so thank you! ❤
I really appreciate the support. It feels good to be back at a hobby that was such a big part of my life and identity for most of my life and to get such fantastic feedback about it from you guys. Definitely makes me want to keep at it and get back into practice. There will for sure be more to come! 🙂

  4. Woooo! I’m glad to see that you’re drawing more since you know, I’ve been a fan of your art for 22 years now. ❤
I bought Rob a sketch book for his birthday because he started doodling again on lined paper and I thought, "What a travesty that all we have is lined paper." He hasn't done anything in it yet but he's excited to start drawing again too.
My only creative moment recently was starting my battle vest that I sent you the pic of. Need more patches now!

    1. Aww, thanks, luv! ❤ ❤ ❤ That's wild to think of how long it's been. ^_^
And yay for Rob doodling again. I hope he starts filling that bad boy out soon with new drawings. Can't wait to see what he comes up with!
And yeah, maybe you can find some cool patches on your trip. The vest is off to a great start though! 😀

    1. Aw, thank you very, very much! ❤ ❤
I've really been enjoying watercolor markers. They take a little practice but are pretty easy to work with. 🙂 If you're interested in giving them a shot some time I have been enjoying the brand Arteza. They have a really fine tip and are great for coloring and even for writing and decorating envelopes for birthday cards and such. 🙂 They also force me to slow down because if you go too quickly and try to make really broad strokes you'll mess up the brush tip so it's a good lesson in patience for me! 😛

      1. Thanks for the tip! I’ll check out Amazon & see if I can either find Arteza or something similar. I suck at art but I’d like to get back into doing some drawing as it’s been forever since I’ve done anything. If that fails, I can use the markers for birthday cards 😉
Looking forward to seeing more of your creations! xx

  5. I love all these drawings! The creepy gothic vibe is really something I think of whenever I come across your blog or your art 😀 I still remember the shark illustration you did last year and I’m absolutely excited should you do it again this year! Looking forward to seeing more of your drawings!!

    1. Aw, thank you so much!! ❤ That makes me so happy. ^_^ There will definitely be more to come. I feel like I'm starting to get back into my groove bit by bit the more I keep drawing again. I'm definitely rusty, but I'm enjoying practicing more again, so thank you for the encouragement to keep at it! There's definitely more to come soon! 😀

  6. Oh my, I love your drawings!!! And I too remember those shark drawings you once did. I love your talent and I hope you’ll get to continue doing what you love. I wanted to try exploring sketching, especially manga/comic book related stuff just to see if I would enjoy it since I used to enjoy doing it as a kid in high school. Keep on drawing!!!

    1. Thank you so much!! 😀 I’m so amazed people remember the shark drawing from last year. Thank you, it really means a lot! ^_^
I think you should totally go for it with venturing into sketching. Going off of manga/comic book related stuff like you mentioned would be a great way to start, actually. When I was younger I did the same thing and I’d watch a lot of 2D animation and just draw the whole time I was watching it to learn more. I’ve actually been thinking of revisiting this practice technique since I’m so out of practice compared to what I used to be. I hope you do end up giving it a go. It can be a really fun and relaxing thing to do and it’s always cool to see what you wind up creating. Sometimes it doesn’t end up at all like what you originally intended to make, but that’s part of the fun is seeing what you can come up with. 🙂

  7. I know I may have said it before but I absolutely love your style. It’s quite unique. The heavy lines are cool and the themes are always a real stand out. I definitely want a tattoo design from you one of these days.

    1. Aw, thank you so much. Seriously. I really appreciate it. I’ve been really enjoying getting back into drawing more but it was initially intimidating since I feel so out of practice compared to years before when I was drawing, doodling, and/or painting every day. All you guys have been so amazing and supportive about it and it is really inspiring and makes me so happy, so thank you. ❤
I love that you like the heavy lines because that's one of my favorite parts is adding the really bold outlines around the outside but keeping thinner lines inside, so thanks for noticing and digging it! ^_^
And what an honor about the tattoo thing! 😀 I have a few people sporting ink from some of my drawings and it always blows my damn mind in the best way possible. We could definitely figure something cool out for ya!

      1. No worries at all. I’m a 100% that I want a tattoo from you. One of my next ones will be one for my eldest daughter. Her middle name is Rose so maybe one of your female characters with a rose in her hair. OR something Star warsy but in your own unique style.
