Whoops! Meant to do this post at the end of July but better late than never, right? 😉 After doing one of these photo-based monthly wrap-up posts for June, I thought it would be fun to carry on and make this a regular sort of installment here on my blog. 🙂 I hope everyone had a fun and safe July. Obviously with the coronavirus still running rampant this year’s 4th of July festivities were MUCH more low key, but Mr. Moth and I still had a great time.
BAKING: I made these S’mores cookies on the 4th of July. They were quite good, and I’m not even a S’mores person normally. 🙂 Another fun part of the 4th of July is that my very own little corner of the blogosphere celebrated it’s 4th Blog Birthday. Woo! 😀
OUTDOORS: It’s been far too hot for me to want to do much of anything outside this month, so I mostly just admired and watered our plants and then scuttled back inside.
We also recently had the pleasant surprise of discovering baby pumpkins! Can’t wait to have homegrown pumpkins this Halloween! That will certainly be a first. 🙂
BOOKS: In reading news, I’ve mostly been on a DC Comics binge this month. I recently joined the DC Universe streaming service and now that I have quite the catalog of DC titles at my fingertips I’m taking full advantage of it. 🙂 As for actual novels, I finished the third novel of the Innkeeper Chronicles and also fed my Leigh Bardugo addiction by finally reading King of Scars. Now that I’ve read all of the books in the “Grishaverse” that are currently out my wait begins for the follow-up to KoS. Luckily I still have her Wonder Woman novel and Ninth House to keep me going until then. 😛
DRAWING: Aside from my Weird and Wild Animal Drawings, I did find time to do some other drawings. 🙂 Near the end of the month I decided it was time to push myself out of my comfort zone and start drawing more dynamic poses. Then I kind of lurched to a halt on the drawing front. I’ll be back at it soon, though! I’ve had a lot of house and research projects keeping me busy.
ANCESTRY SEARCH: One of the research projects I started in July was that of my very own lineage. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and what better time than while my place of work is still shut down? I’ve been able to trace 3 of my grandparents’ family histories back pretty damn far and there have been some really fascinating results that I want to do a lot more research on.
How was your July? Any exciting plans for August?? What with the pandemic and all I can’t say I have a lot planned for August, but one thing I look forward to are the Friday night video chats with my BFF Cupcakes & Machetes as well as our current buddy read as we take on Gideon the Ninth together. 😀 Not super far yet, but really enjoying the book already. Damn, lady, good eye! Yes, you’re absolutely correct. He’s my mom’s grandfather on her mom’s side but she never got to meet him since he passed away so young. It’s actually the same guy in both photos, too. 🙂
I can’t wait for FaceTime Friday either! And yay, topic list! They really do come in handy, especially since we have booze involved! 😛

Wow, I would not have guessed that both men were the same guy though. I can see your mom’s face in the picture on the right. Do you know what he passed away so young from?

Right? When I really look I can see it, but I would not have guessed they were the same dude at first either. He died of cancer (can’t remember off hand what kind). His wife also died young (suicide) so my mom didn’t get to meet either of those grandparents.

Aww what have you learnt about your family? Please tell. That’s exciting about the pumpkins, how cool to be able to use your own pumpkins for Halloween. Unlike you I love the heat. I like all weather conditions actually. Here it gets into the 40’s (which is 100s in your weather) and that’s a bit too warm for me but I still kind of like it.

Thanks for the interest in my family history. I’ve been having so much fun hunting down the lineage of my ancestors, and I’ve found some really interesting bits of history along the way. 🙂 My 13th great grandfather was involved in the Gunpowder Plot to attempt to assassinate King James I and ended up being charged with treason because of it. He was executed on my birthday in 1606 by being hanged, drawn, and quartered. His son, had a way better go of things and was a highly reputed natural philosopher, astrologer, and intellectual who dabbled in some alchemy apparently. He also did some time as a privateer, killed a French nobleman in a duel, was a founding member of the Royal Society and was credited with coming up with a crude theory of photosynthesis as well as the modern wine bottle. Kind of a Jack of all Trades. He’s even referenced in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter in a way that praises his scientific attainments as “hardly less than supernatural”. I also had another relative in the same part of my family tree who died at the Battle of Towton during the War of the Roses. And there was another relative who was Cofferer to King Henry VII and made Keeper of Portchester Castle in 1509. Haha sorry for the long response, I just have been super pumped finding out all this cool stuff. 😀 I just got some more information I’ve been in need of to hunt information down on my dad’s mom’s part of the family so hopefully I’ll find some more cool information!

OMG I love this stuff!! Wow, what a history that’s amazing. What’s a Cofferer though? Makes me want to investigate my own family history. My wife’s dad did it some years back as he didn’t even know much about his own dad. His dad has died in a car accident ten years after returning from WWII. Turns out he was quite the war hero and had taken down machine gun bunkers single handedly but the medals had all gone to his commanding officer. Hand written letters by his mates were discovered proving that my father in-laws dad was the true hero of the day. My Grandmother claims that we are related to some Duke in England but she’s a little nutty as she’s 93 haha. So who knows. Cool stuff though. I’d be super excited to learn/hear more about your families history.

Yeah, I hope they make the DC Streaming service available internationally so more people can enjoy it. I love having this whole catalogue of things to read available to me now. 🙂

I finally started reading N. K. Jemisin and I love her.I’m almost finished with Dracula. That’ll be a fun review. It’s definitely not as plodding as a lot of classics I’ve read, and it keeps me on my toes. I’m co-planning a baby shower for my BFF with my other BFF. I need to bring my cane to make sure everyone maintains social distance 😀

We had to push it back a week due to the remnants of Hurricane Laura(?) so it’s next week. It’s at one of the planners’ dad’s house and, since he’s high risk it was just going to be outside with all the proper precautions. With the possibility of rain, it just seemed like the best idea.
