Whatcha Reading: Golden Son

Having an awesome best friend is great. Having an awesome best friend who has an uncanny knack for recommending good books is even better!

The aforementioned best friend would be none other than my fellow blogger, Cupcakes and Machetes. You can read some of her reviews on some of said good books at her blog.

Years ago, when she thrust her copy of A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin into my hands and demanded I read it, I listened. I regret NOTHING. It launched an addiction to the books/shows/fan theories/basically all things even remotely connected to ASOIAF/GOT.

I think this comic appropriately sums it up for most of us who read ASOIAF per a friend’s recommendation. 😛

From then on I knew I could trust in her book suggestions. So when she recommended Pierce Brown’s YA sci fi novel Red Rising to me I heeded the call and gave it a read back in 2015.

It. Was. Great. Here’s a link to Red Rising’s Goodreads page so you can learn more about it!

Now I’m reading the second book in the Red Rising trilogy, Golden Son. I literally just started it today so I can’t say too much about it yet other than that it holds your interest right off the bat and that I am already into it. 🙂

I don’t know why I waited so long to get around to reading the sequel, but it seems an appropriate read for the end of November (aka- Sci-Fi month!)

NaNO-NO-NO-NO-WriMo: 2016 Flunkie

I know it isn’t quite the end of the month yet, but I also know that my first attempt at NaNoWriMo is a sinking ship at this point. But you know what? I’m okay with it. Surprisingly okay with it, actually. The outcome was hardly as victorious as I had hoped for, but it was a valuable learning experience none the less.

This month wound up being much busier than I had anticipated and I didn’t quite figure out how to manage my time properly until it was too late. Of course I plan to continue writing and next year I’ll don my warpaint and try again. (And hopefully do a LOT more writing and learning between now and then.)

nanonono

Epic fantasy writer, Patrick Rothfuss, wrote a great piece about his first attempt at NaNoWriMo back in 2011. One has to appreciate his honesty and wit when reading it. Plus, he included this amazing achievement for all us losers out there! 😉

So, despite knowing that I will not complete the 50,000 word challenge this year on my first attempt, I know that I will continue writing. I will also try again next year, and prepare for it better. I’ll know how to manage my time better and I’ll hopefully have learned more about writing between now and then to be better equipped in taking on the beast that is NaNoWriMo. Best of luck to the rest of you out there who are getting so close to your 50,000 words. I look forward to trying again next year. 🙂

NaNoWriMo 2016 Update No. 1

Halloween has come and gone and now November is upon us. As I mentioned in my last post that means it is National Novel Writing Month (aka- NaNoWriMo) (aka- Nano Rhino).

I’ve never given the NaNoWriMo challenge a try, but this year I’m giving it a shot. I wanna see what I can do. The challenge is to write at least 50,000 words in the month of November. That’s a lot of work, but I’m gonna give it my best. If you break that number down, that means I should be writing roughly 1,666 words per day during the month of November.

I figure I will post little updates on here to log my progress from time to time during the month. It will either help to motivate me or shame me if I fail to meet my goal.

shame

Aaaaand now it begins! This is either going to be hell, an amazing and rewarding experience, or both. 😀

Nano Rhino

Misunderstandings happen. Sometimes hilarity ensues because of it.

While talking to my boyfriend on the phone last night I started to say how NaNoWriMo is coming up.

That is not what he heard.

He asked me to repeat myself and I did, this time stating what NaNoWriMo meant: National Novel Writing Month.

He proceeds to tell me that he had thought I’d said “Nano Rhino, as in a very tiny rhinoceros.” 😛

Manga Review: Soulless

Having just finished reading volume 3 of the manga series Soulless, I have to take some time to babble on about how much I adore it.

It’s always a treat to read the continuing adventures of the characters in this series. I adore them. Gail Carriger creates such a wonderfully crafted world by blowing the dust off Victorian England (and other exciting locations) and adding some paranormal and steampunk flair into it.
The social dynamics between the different types of beings in this series always proves to be interesting. Social protocols and conflicting, heated rivalries make for tense and often humorous interactions between werewolves and vampires and other supernaturals/preternaturals and humans.
If you enjoy historical fiction and paranormal romance you should rather enjoy this. One of my favorite things about the romance in this is that it is not all-consuming or perfect. People make mistakes and squabble like they would in real life. They still have lives and interests/goals and friendships outside of their romances.
It has adventure, humor, thrills, romance, well-written and likeable characters, and wonderful ar
t. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

My only regret is that there won’t be any more of the manga. Fortunately, there is also the Parasol Protectorate series of novels written by Gail Carriger that came before the manga, featuring the same characters and more adventures to be read.

Spread the Love: The One Lovely Blog Award

I was so pleasantly surprised to see that I was nominated by none other than The Shameful Narcissist for The One Lovely Blog Award! 🙂 Special thanks for the nomination. I really do appreciate it. 🙂 Her blog is a fun and well-worded medley of her love for retro video games, fantasy, books, her own reviews/fan fiction, and more! Her passion for these things shines through in her well-worded posts. I highly recommend checking her blog out!

one-lovely-blog-award

Although I had never heard of The One Lovely Blog Award until I was nominated for it, I can really get behind what it stands for. Those nominated share a few interesting facts about themselves and then nominate others to do so as well. As said by The Shameful Narcissist: “It creates a potentially never ending cycle of sharing and positivity, something there can never be enough of in the world.” I couldn’t agree more. With all the negativity out there, we could use a little more fun and love out there for one another.

The Official Rules of this Award go as such:

  • Thank the person who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.

  • List the rules and display the award.

  • Nominate 6-10 bloggers to receive this award.

  • State 7 facts about yourself.

So, without further ado, here are 7 random tidbits about yours truly.

Fact #1: I have what is often described as a “young” sounding voice. It makes doing most vocal impressions difficult for me, but I have a couple that I am quite proud of. One is the titular character of Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo when she gets excited and screams “HAM!” and the other is that I can do a mean impression of a Murloc from World of Warcraft. It isn’t much, but you work with whatcha got! 😛

Fact #2: When I was a kid my first little girl crush was on David Bowie in Labyrinth. I regret nothing!!

Fact #3: I have a cat who is my furry little minion. Her name is Bailey and I love her beyond measure. I call her by like a thousand nicknames. Some are plays on her name like “Bailbo Baggins” or “Peter Bail-ish”. Others are things like “Chub Cat”, “Pound Cake”, or “Chubkins”. She is a cheeseburger cat.

Fact #4: I love learning. My favorite subjects are history, mythology and folklore, anatomy and physiology, and marine biology, but I love to research a wide variety of different subjects. I adore museums and libraries. If schooling was more affordable I would probably be enrolled in classes until the day I die.

Fact #5: My favorite holiday is Halloween! What’s not to love? The spooky fun, costumes, candy, scary stories and movies, pumpkin carving, apple orchards for cider and donuts, the list just goes on and on and on for me. It’s also the highlight of my favorite season: autumn.

Fact #6: I love sharks. There are so many kinds and so many interesting things to learn about them all. They truly are amazing creatures. They’re just fascinating. My favorite species is probably the whale shark. They’re gentle giants.

Fact #7: I am very passionate about people learning first aid and CPR. Sounds weird, I know, but these are easy things to learn that can literally save a life. I took my first CPR and First Aid class in 2009 and I remember as we learned the Heimlich maneuver thinking, I’ll probably never use this, but I guess it’s good to know. I kid you not, the following weekend I was out to dinner with my ex and his family and his great uncle began choking on his dinner. And I don’t mean he was coughing like crazy kind of choking, I mean his windpipe was completely blocked off and he could not breathe or even make a sound because of the food lodged in his throat. My ex’s step-mother noticed his situation just before I did and saved him by preforming the Heimlich on him at the table. A couple years ago, I myself was choking but there was no on there who could help me, so using a chair, I performed it on myself and saved myself. That was empowering to say the least. If I hadn’t known how to do it, I can say with almost certainty that I would not be here today. It’s a humbling thought how easily things can end if you are not able to take matters into your own hands when needed. I feel like these are things students should learn in school and that should be much more widely taught to the public.

So, there’s my 7 facts about me! 🙂 I tried to think a little outside the box with these since I’ve covered other more general facts about myself already in my blog. Thanks again to The Shameful Narcissist for the nomination. If you hadn’t already just completed this fact challenge I would have your blog on my list of nominees as well. 😀
