Hello, it’s your resident sick girl here, living her best couch potato life with her trusted fuzzy minion cohort by her side, and we’ve got lots of new Inktober pieces for ya. A whole week’s worth, in fact!

Day 8: The daily prompt was “FRAIL” and I took my inspiration from old desiccated mummy faces. I then kind of took it into a more living dead sort of direction and ended up with this:

inktober8

Day 9: The daily prompt was “SWING” and chose to do a little sketchbook quickie of my girl, Batwoman (Bombshells batter style, of course!) 😉

inktober9

Day 10: The daily prompt was “PATTERN” and I was completely and utterly stumped on this one. I decided to just draw some quick little jack o’lanterns in a pattern of sizes (tall-short-tall-short). Hey, they can’t all be winners, right? 😛

inktober10

Day 11: The daily prompt was “SNOW” and at this point I really wanted to up my Inktober game. I took inspiration from the legends of the wendigo since they’re associated with winter/snow.

inktober11

Day 12: The daily prompt was “DRAGON” and I was feeling sick as a dog at this point, so I *technically* posted this the morning of Day 13, but oh, well. I did start it on the 12th, but NyQuil landed me in bed earlier than I would have intended.

inktober12

Day 13: The daily prompt was “ASH” and I embraced my sickly current state and drew a sickly woman covered in ash.

Day 14: The daily prompt was “OVERGROWN” and I went with a wild forest nymph with overgrown, wild red hair and branches growing out of her head because why the hell not?? 😉

inktober14

Well, that’s this week’s Inktober installment from yours truly. I hope you guys have been enjoying your October so far. There’s plenty of Halloween fun still to be had this month. What fun autumn hijinks have you been up to? What creative stuff are you working on? 🙂

Batwoman Played by Ruby Rose?? Let the Fangirling commence!

tumblr_mjkgcsy8iM1s8r3mzo1_500

If you just heard a shrill, high octave bat skree come out of nowhere, that was probably me just learning the news that Ruby Rose has been cast to play Batwoman on the CW. I’d apologize for any bleeding eardrums, but this level of excitement just cannot be contained!

Incoherent-Fangirling.gif

There are so many levels to this excitement. One being Batwoman (aka: Kate Kane) is a total badass and I loooove her, another being Ruby Rose is ALSO a total badass and I loooove her as well, and yet another level of awesomeness is getting to see more representation of an openly lesbian character portrayed on TV, something Miss Rose said she wished she’d been able to see more of when she was a young member in the LGBTQ+ community. 🙂 SO. MUCH. AWESOME. I cannot wait! ❤

Ruby Rose will be making her debut as Batwoman in the CW’s annual crossover event in December, but is slated to have her own upcoming show for the 2019-2020 season! I don’t watch a whole lot of TV, but this is one show I will NOT be missing. 😀

Book/Comic-Related Christmas Haul

Brrr! All of the people wishing for a “White Christmas” certainly got their wish here in Michigan. (What were you lunatics thinking?!) 😛 I just got in from shoveling a bunch of snow and am chilled to the bone. Thankfully, hot chocolate with butterscotch schnapps mixed in is a thing. 😉 It’s soooo good and soooo warm. I’m in a state of total bliss now as I thaw out.

I hope all of you enjoyed the holidays with your loved ones and had a wonderful time. ❤ (And maybe even gave and got some awesome prezzies!) 😛 Christmas certainly is NOT all about the presents, but this post sure as heck is gonna be. 😉 I was too excited about some of the fantastic gifts I got this Christmas not to want to share them.  and Let’s start this post off by talking about my favorite gift I unwrapped this year:

Xmas Gift from Chris1

I have been coveting these particular Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland vintage artwork ornaments for YEARS. Seriously, years. My dream is to one day decorate my Christmas tree in all literature-themed ornaments and decorations, and these fit the theme so perfectly. Needless to say, I was beyond elated to get them as one of my gifts from my boyfriend. He ended up spoiling me rotten, but these were my favorite of the gifts he got me for sentimental reasons. ❤

Xmas Gift from Chris2

Okay, enough being mushy, let’s move on and talk about COMICS! 😀 I got some graphic novels I am very excited to read. First, we have the first three volumes of the manga series The Girl from the Other Side. I’d been seeing artwork for this series floating around and absolutely loved what I saw, but I had no idea it was an actual manga series until I read a review on volume 1 from the Random Melon Reads blog. I can’t wait to learn more about this story. Here’s a tidbit about it from Goodreads:

“In a land far away, there were two kingdoms: the Outside, where twisted beasts roamed that could curse with a touch, and the Inside, where humans lived in safety and peace. The girl and the beast should never have met, but when they do, a quiet fairytale begins. This is a story of two people–one human, one inhuman–who linger in the hazy twilight that separates night from day.”

Xmas Gift from Chris3

Next, we have some more mainstream goodies starring some of my fave DC leading ladies! 😀 I’ve heard really good things about Batwoman: Rebirth, and I’m looking forward to continuing the Bombshells series with volumes 3 and 4. Volume 2 had a definite lack of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy so I’m pumped to see them right on the cover in the thick of the action for volume 3.

Xmas Gift from Chris6

Speaking of continuing series I’ve already started, I’m looking forward to seeing what shenanigans the girls from Giant Days get up to in volumes 4 and 5. I’m also thrilled to report that Cupcakes and Machetes has gotten into this comic recently as well. It’s always fun getting to talk to friends about comics and books and whatnot. 🙂

And on the topic of awesome female-centered comics I like to enjoy with my friends, I also now get to enjoy volumes 2, 3, and 4 of Rat Queens! I didn’t shy away from expressing my love for this series when I reviewed volume 1 back in March, so you can imagine how giddy I was to receive more of this series. It isn’t every comic I give a rating of “Five out of five flaming orc skulls.” 😉

I got some other awesome non-comic or book related gifties, but the last I want to share with you guys is this awesome shark mug and shark snack bowl duo. It’s no secret that I love me some sharks, so I was pretty pumped about these. Especially because I’m also a fan of coffee mugs. And snacks. 😛

Xmas Gift from Chris7

Did you have a lovely Christmas this year? What was your favorite present you gave and/or received? Are you glad the holiday chaos is finally over?? 😛

Oh! And because a couple of you asked to see it, here’s a pic of my R2-D2 Christmas sweater I got this year. 🙂

Review- DC Bombshells, Vol. 2: Allies

Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s been nearly five months since I finished reading Volume 1 of DC Comics Bombshells! I absolutely loved the first volume so I was pretty excited to finally get around to reading the second volume.

dcb1

You know how sometimes you read something and it just really resonates with what is going on in the world around you? I definitely had this feeling while continuing the Bombshells’ saga. Between the current political climate and a particularly frustrating 48 hours where I had not one, not even two or three, but FOUR personal reminders of the importance of feminism, I was more than ready to see these female heroes kick some Nazi and misogynistic asses. 😛

dcb6

Volume 2 takes us all over the globe to locations like Berlin, London, and Greece as WWII continues to rage on. Even on the home front in Gotham City, tensions rise and danger looms. One thing I really like about DC Bombshells is that it touches on both soldier and civilian life during the war. No one goes unaffected by the horror going on in the world.

dcb4

As if the Axis Powers weren’t enough to contend with, a sinister supernatural influence continues to grow in power, bringing a horde of undead soldiers with it.

dcb2

The art continues to stun in this volume and the characters are fantastic. (Batwoman is still, of course, my fave!) Strong female relationships aplenty in these pages, both platonic and romantic alike. Also, just strong, kick ass females in general. The characters are believable with their own motivations, insecurities, weaknesses and strengths.

dcb10

The biggest bummer for me was that I was missing my girls, Harley and Ivy in this one. They were nowhere to be seen in volume 2. *Proceeds to pout in the corner.*

But, hey, at least we get more of Zatanna and Bunny Constantine!

dcb8

All in all, I really enjoyed volume 2. I think I enjoyed volume 1 a little bit more, but I’m still looking forward to reading the third volume very much.

Review- DC Bombshells, Vol. 1: Enlisted

Okay, first thing’s first: I Absolutely LOVED this!

dcbvol1
The art is stunning and the story of how some of our most iconic female DC characters enter the fray of WWII pulled me in right off the bat. (That may or may not have been a pun. I make no apologies.)

dc-bombshells-batwoman-art
I love historical fiction, and this is, in my opinion, pretty damn good historical fiction.
There were multiple fun surprises (including some DC characters I absolutely did not expect to make appearances) throughout the first volume and I definitely look forward to reading the second.

This Week’s Reading Goals

This week’s gonna be a busy one but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do to get her reading done! *Puts on determined face.*

I’m currently on page 346 of The Girl with All the Gifts, by M.R. Carey and I plan on finishing it in the next day or two. I really have enjoyed this book from the start but it did hit a little bit of a slow point in the middle that slowed me down for a while. Last night’s reading session changed that though and I’m just as invested as I was when I started reading it. I can’t wait to see how this one ends. Overall I’ve greatly enjoyed it thus far.

You can read more of my thoughts on the book here if you’re interested. 🙂

It was also recently reviewed by my #1 Partner in Crime here.

My other reading goals for the week are of the comic book variety. I recently read both volume 1 and volume 2 of the New 52 Batwoman TPBs by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman. This week I’m hoping to start and complete volume 3.

I was really looking forward to checking out the Batwoman comics for a variety of reasons, but one of the main ones goes wayyy back to Batwoman’s origins in the 1950’s. One of the supposed major reasons for her creation was to provide Bruce Wayne with a female love interest to shush all those rumors about Batman and Robin being “partners” of a vastly different nature than the crime-fighting variety. These days, Batwoman is much more than a pretty little bandage to cover up any sort of wounded hetero-masculinity that Batman and the Boy Wonder might have had circling around them. In fact, she herself is a lesbian. Times are changing and if DC really did initially create Batwoman to sweep any rumors of homosexuality under the conservative rug than I think it is a refreshing change to see her now out and not giving a damn what others think regarding her sexual orientation.

Then and Now

*Steps calmly off of soapbox*

Aaaannd now back to your regularly scheduled reading program:

So, keeping it in the Bat Family, my other intended reading goal is one that has been on my TBR list for a while: Batman: The Long Halloween, written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Time Sale. With Halloween coming fast it seems an appropriate time to read this. The art and the color scheme are pretty dark and moody which I think will go well with the story.
