Happy Fall (and Hobbit Day)!!

fall

Woo! It’s September 22nd and you know what that means! It’s the first official day of fall (aka: the best season ever)! Aaand, it also just so happens to be Hobbit Day, the birthday of both Frodo and Bilbo Baggins.

It’s the perfect day to curl up with one of Tolkien’s books (or the movies that came after them) and enjoy your favorite fall drinks and treats while you get all cozy. ❀ And it’s Friday, so why not just continue doing so right on through the weekend? πŸ˜›

Calvatia Gigantea: The Giant Puffball!

IMG_1519
Behold! The giant puffball (and my shoes).

I’ve stumbled across a few giant puffball mushrooms before, but had never bothered picking one since you often hear the warnings about those poisonous look-alikes and I’ve grown slightly fond of breathing over the years. πŸ˜‰

Well, after reading some helpful info on properly identifying edible giant puffball mushrooms, we decided to chance it by plucking up this bad boy we found on my mom and dad’s property. Here’s my mom plucking it up. Say “Hi” Mama Moth! πŸ˜›

IMG_1522 (2)

After my mom picked it out of the ground we brought it inside and prepared to cut it open. The guides we read said you wanted a pure white center in the mushroom, and no gills and whatnot, so we were pretty pleased to cut it up and see that snowy center. πŸ™‚

IMG_1544

We’ve still gotta cook it up, but we’re excited to try it. If I suddenly stop posting after this, well, I guess our mushroom identifying skills were not quite as up to snuff as we’d hoped. Wish us luck!

Do you ever hunt/cook mushrooms? Any experience with puffballs? Lemme know! I’d love to hear about it. πŸ™‚

Sunflowers, Sweet Potatoes, Lemon Trees & Cream Puffs Galore!

IMG_1466

Hey, guys! I hope everyone had a great weekend. Mine was a lot of fun. My boyfriend and I went to see the new It movie, so expect a review of that to come soon. πŸ˜€ Since my previous post was about scary clowns, I thought I’d mix it up with something a little sweeter before delving back into that. πŸ˜›

Speaking of sweet, check out this growing sweet potato bush from the green house. I feel like with Fall quickly approaching I’m running outta time to share these gardening photos so pardon this random post.

IMG_1468

We’re also growing two different types of lemon trees in the green house. They’ve been doing really well so far this Summer, but we’re going to have to move them inside pretty soon so they survive the coming winter.

IMG_1469

So, plant business aside, I’ve been meaning to share the photos of those cream puffs I mentioned making before for my dad’s birthday. πŸ™‚ Here’s some of the Work In Progress pics, and then the final product, topped with powdered sugar and filled with a light and fluffy cream filling.

Coulrophobia: the Fear of Clowns

114ux7

Coulrophobia: a lengthy word that refers to the fear of clowns.

Hey, guys! ❀ Since tonight is the premier of season 7 of American Horror Story AND this Friday is when the new film adaptation of Stephen King’s It hits theaters, it seems an appropriate time to talk about clowns and how they scare the hell out of so many of us. Plus, Halloween is fast approaching, and I’m sure we’ll have many a spooky thing to discuss in the weeks to come. πŸ˜€

clowns2

Despite the many phobias I myself have, clowns are not really much of an issue for me these days. Same with dolls and ventriloquist dummies and whatnot. I know they tend to freak most people out, but I tend to be fairly indifferent to them thankfully. This, however, was not the case when I was but a wee Ignited Moth. I was very afraid of clowns. I remember going to the Fox Theatre in Detroit with my grandma in the winter and it would be so dark out and the sewer-grates would have creepy steam rising from them. I was always convinced Pennywise was down there and that he was just waiting to snatch us up.

clowns4

I also have an aunt who used to keep this creepy-ass clown doll in the back seat of her car when I was younger. The thing had a mini baseball bat (no doubt for beating children to death with, because why else would a clown need a baseball bat?) But that’s about it. I never really had that lingering fear of clowns that so many people I know still do. I’m thankful for that though, because I have plenty of my own fears to keep me on edge. πŸ˜›

So, how about you? Do you (or have you ever) had a phobia of clowns? Do you remember what caused it? I’m just curious. No worries, I won’t be sending any clowns to your door or anything like that. Just wondering is all. πŸ˜‰

Also, are you planning on going to see the new It movie when it opens? Or are you gonna watch this season of AHS? They’ve been teasing the hell out of clowns for this season, so that should be interesting. I know it’s supposed to have to do with this past election as well (now there’s a real horror show if I’ve ever seen one). πŸ˜›

pumpkins-halloween-facebook-cover

Of all the holidays, Halloween is the one that makes me feel the most festive. In the spirit of the coming holiday, I thought it would be fun to take part in this cute little survey as posted by Agatha Chocolats. (And tag my fellow Halloween-lovers to join in on the fun and do so too!) πŸ˜‰

The Questions:

  1. What scent sets the holiday mood?
  2. Favorite Halloween Fun Size Candy Bar?
  3. Favorite Halloween movie?
  4. Favorite seasonal sweet?
  5. What toppings are on the perfect candy apple?
  6. What’s your favorite costume you ever wore on Halloween?
  7. Most enjoyable fall tradition?
  8. Pumpkin Patch Hayride or Haunted Hayride?
  9. What song is a must for a Halloween Party Playlist?
  10. Favorite Halloween Monster: Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.?
  11. Cider or Cocoa?
  12. Scary movies or Scaredy cat?
  13. Pumpkin Spice: Yum, or Yuck?
  14. Which is scariest: Spiders, Zombies, or Clowns?
  15. Best find in your Trick or Treat bag?
  16. Worst thing to get in your Trick or Treat bag?

My Answers:

What scent sets the holiday mood?

A few particular scents come to mind: bonfires, pumpkin spice, fresh apples, and crisp autumn air on a cool night.

Favorite Halloween Fun Size Candy Bar?

Do Reese’s cups count as a fun size candy bar? If not, Snickers (either the peanut butter kind or the almond kind).

Favorite Halloween movie?

trickrtreatdvd
Trick ‘r Treat: this movie fully encompasses the spirit and fun of Halloween. I love it and watch it every year.
picmonkey-collage-halloweeen
These are the Halloween movies I’ve been watching every year since I was a kid. I never really thought about the fact that they are all Disney movies til now.

October is also the month I indulge in my horror addiction and binge watch any horror film I can get my grubby little hands on.

Favorite seasonal sweet?

79919-autumn-meme-pumpkin-spice-all-heko-300x226
Seriously. ALL. THE. THINGS.

What toppings are on the perfect candy apple?

I’m a classic caramel apple with nuts kind of girl.

What’s your favorite costume you ever wore on Halloween?

undead-pirate-wench
Undead pirate wench costume

Most enjoyable fall tradition?

Ohhhh, this is a tough one to narrow down. I love it all: Cider mills, costume parties, bonfires, carving pumpkins, horror movie marathons, cuddle/hoodie weather, dreary days, spooky stories/legends and historical tours. Just to name a few. πŸ˜›

Pumpkin Patch Hayride or Haunted Hayride?

Haunted Hayride!

What song is a must for a Halloween Party Playlist?

Voltaire- When You’re Evil

Creature Feature- A Gorey Demise

The Ramones- Pet Sematary

The Misfits- Halloween

Voltaire- Zombie Prostitute

There are countless others, so I’m just gonna move onto the next question.

Favorite Halloween Monster: Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.?

If we’re talking classic Hollywood monsters, Frankenstein. If we’re talking just monsters in general, I love me some werewolves.

Cider or Cocoa?

Tough question. This is like asking someone if they want to keep their left foot or right foot. Both are pretty good. I guess I’ll just say cider in the fall and cocoa in the winter! πŸ˜›

Scary movies or Scaredy cat?

Scary movies. Definitely. I’ve been watching them for as long as I can remember and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. That said, make no mistakes, I am a total wuss. But with all the horror movies I’ve seen, I am that girl who hears a spooky noise and gets the nearest sharp object to wield just in case. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t sleep with a machete next to my bed. Better safe than sorry! πŸ˜‰

Pumpkin Spice: Yum, or Yuck?

Yum. All the yums.

Which is scariest: Spiders, Zombies, or Clowns?

Ugh. Spiders. Eight-legged abominations that are made from nightmares and wicked intentions. Sure, they eat bugs. So do bats. Bats are cute. Spiders are horror incarnate.

Best find in your Trick or Treat bag?

Everyone else always called them “grandma candies”, but I really like those peanut butter kisses in the orange or black wrappers. It’s like peanut butter taffy, what’s not to love? That or when you’d score one of those little bags of cheetos or fruit snacks. I didn’t really care for chocolate all that much when I was a kid. (What the hell was wrong with me?)

Worst thing to get in your Trick or Treat bag?

Pencils. Sure, those little halloween-themed pencils you would get looked cool, but they never sharpened worth a damn, and when they finally did, the lead would break immediately. It was a vicious cycle of: sharpen, sharpen, sharpen, gently touch shitty pencil to paper and watch in frustration as the lead snapped, sharpen, sharpen, sharpen, and yet again watch with helpless rage as the lead broke right along with all your hopes and dreams. You’d wind up sharpening it to a pencil nubbin before you could even so much as write your damn name with it. /End Rant.

Also, any of the adorable and scrumptious looking homemade treats people would pass out. They always looked awesome and then your protective parents would always throw them right in the garbage in front of you because they might have razor blades or pins in them.

Happy Fall/Happy Hobbit Day!!

There’s been hints of it in the air lately, but fall is finally upon us!! πŸ˜€

screen-shot-2015-09-22-at-11-40-25-am

Fall is, without a doubt, my favorite season. The weather’s perfect, there’s the king of all holidays (I’m looking at you, Halloween, you sexy bitch!), cider and donuts, spooky activities galore, hoodies and scarves to be worn, and horror movies and books to be devoured.

Aaaaand today being September 22nd also means that it is none other than Hobbit Day!!

Hobbit Day celebrates the mutual birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, and if you don’t know who they are, you need to get yourself schooled because you’re missing out on some good shit.

These guys know how to party.

Sorry to be crass, just stating the truth.
