Birthday Snow Day

Brrrr! My portion of Michigan is currently under a Wind Chill Warning from the National Weather Service that included fun little details like “Wind chills as low as 45 below zero expected.” and “The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.” So, basically, stepping outside right now is like getting bitch slapped by a Wampa.

With all the snow and ice we’ve had lately I’ve been on a little unplanned vacation due to all the snow days at my work. All the schools are closed due to the weather so I’ve been able to stay cozy at home and do a bunch of writing, reading and drawing which has been really nice! πŸ™‚ I hadn’t planned on taking my birthday off from work so it’s kind of a fun little surprise having it off today. Mother Nature can be cruel AND kind. πŸ˜‰

It can be difficult finding ways to go out and celebrate your birthday when you were born in the frigid dead of winter, but this year I managed to celebrate AND stay warm, so it was a win-win. Mr. and Mrs. Cupcakes and Machetes came to stay the weekend, which included going to dinner, going to a giant arcade, prezzies of the most epic caliber, and board games galore! I also celebrated with family before the weekend came to an end, and of course that was fun too because my parents and brother (and the puggies!) are awesome. Needless to say, it was a fun but exhausting weekend, so I wasn’t totally heartbroken when school/work was canceled. πŸ˜‰ (The only thing that sucks is not getting paid for all these snow days!)

Poor Mr. Moth had to hop on his tauntaun and brave the cold today to go to work so I plan on getting good and properly caffeinated and writing my butt off. More birthday shenanigans to ensue once he gets home, but for now I’m off to work on my book with an awesome new writing program courtesy of the bestest friend in all the land, C&M. ❀

Hope any of you a bitter cold winter like us is staying as warm and cozy as possible right now. ❀

It is always an honor and literally brings a smile to my face whenever I get nominated for a blogger award or tagged for one of the many fun tags floating around out there. Goblin Shark Facts

Goblin-Shark-reddit

One of my favorite things about sharks is simply how many different kinds there are, and how vastly unique one species can be from another. One of the first sharks to come to mind when I think about “weird sharks” would have to be none other than the goblin shark. I’ve enjoyed learning what little snippets I could about these elusive buggers for some time now, so I was looking forward to having this excuse to research them some more. So, that said, let’s get into the fun and talk about these interesting sharks!

Despite their ghoulish name (and appearance), Goblin sharks are of the “pretty in pink” variety, ranging in color schemes from a lighter greyish pink to a strikingly vibrant dark pink as they get older. Their unique color is due to their skin being ghostly translucent due to lack of pigment, so the pink you’re seeing is actually from the shark’s blood vessels showing just beneath the skin.

GoblinShark-01

If you think the goblin shark looks frightful at a glance, you should see it in action when its hungry! Utilizing a feeding method known as “slingshot feeding”, the goblin shark launches its whole friggin’ mouth forward to snatch up prey in what I can only compare to the chestburster scene in the movie Alien.

source.gif

Similarly to great white sharks, goblin sharks do not do well in captivity, and the few times they have been kept in aquariums they have died shortly after arrival. 😦 This, combined with the rarity of sightings of living specimens, makes them pretty mysterious to scientists.

Despite being rarely seen by humans, goblin sharks are found in oceanic waters all around the world, but most sightings and captures have occurred off the coasts of Japan, making it little surprise that the very first specimen was discovered there in 1898. (Imagine being the first person to find such an unusual-looking shark!)

giphy.gif

Hey, guys! πŸ˜€ Today officially marks 2 years since this Ignited Moth first fluttered onto WordPress, and just like any moth to the flame, I just can’t seem to stay away. There is such a fantastic community of bloggers here. So thank you ALL for making this such a fun place to come to, to post, to read, and to chat with all you awesome people. ❀

UnsungSkinnyJavalina-size_restricted

In other exciting blog-related news, I just reached 301 Followers here at my humble little nook in the WP blogosphere, and that makes me so happy. πŸ™‚ Thank you all for the support and having taken an interest in my ramblings, doodles, pictures, and the like. It really does mean a lot. ❀ ❀ ❀

Love-you-so-much

I mentioned recently that I’d really be pushing myself and making more time for pursuing my creative endeavors in the second half of the year, and that is still the plan. So from this point forward, expect more art/writing/etc. posts peppered in again with the usual reviews and ramblings. I’m hoping to give the good ol’ blog a nice makeover soon as well. So lots of new stuff to come! πŸ˜€

Aaaand to those of you celebrating it, Happy 4th of July! ❀ I’d wanted to make this post much bigger and grander, BUT today I’m going with my boyfriend to his family’s big 4th of July bash and there is an Oreo dessert and S’more dessert to be made, so off I must go. I’ve given myself a nice little vacation from work surrounding the holiday so I’ll be using this time to catch up on some writing, reading, drawing, and blogging (my own and catching up on what all you fine and fancy folk have going on!) πŸ˜‰

Have a great week, everyone, aaaaaaand thank you for your:

Book Club, Buddy Reads, and Vegan Chocolate Mousse– OH, MY!

archimedes-book-gif

This weekend has been a blast. We had some good friends over to the house for the first time, which was very exciting. I hosted this month’s book club get-together, and my boyfriend and Cupcakes and Machetes‘ husband went out to one of the nearby breweries so we ladies could have the whole place to ourselves. Which basically involved a lot of snacking, inappropriate conversation, a tour of the house (the reading nook and giant bean bag were both a hit!) and more snacking. Most of the girls in our book club are strictly vegan, so I made a variety of vegan dishes for everyone to nom on and everything turned out great. The chocolate mousse was definitely a success, so I’ll share the recipe at the bottom of this post in case any of you are interested. πŸ˜‰

anna-chocolate-disney-elsa-Favim.com-1693606.gif

C&M and her hubby brought us an amazing bundle of goodies, which was so sweet and thoughtful. Aaaaand she and I decided to do a buddy read for Kevin Hearne’s A Plague of Giants in August, so there’s that to look forward to as well.

3 Ingredient Vegan Chocolate Mousse Recipe:

This recipe is SO EASY. You just need 3 ingredients:

  • 2 small boxes of Jello brand instant chocolate pudding mix
  • Chocolate almond milk
  • “So Delicious Dairy Free” coconut whipped topping

In a large mixing bowl, whisk your pudding mix and chocolate almond milk together, adding enough almond milk so that it gets to a cake batter consistency. Then, using a rubber spatula, fold in the coconut whipped topping so that it is fully blended but not over-whipped. Refrigerate until you’re ready to serve.

I served ours with graham crackers for dipping and it was seriously addicting. I think it would be great for dipping strawberries or sliced banana into, too, though. The great thing about this mousse, is how versatile the recipe can be. If you want to use vanilla or plain almond milk instead of chocolate, the pistachio, banana cream, vanilla, and lemon flavors of Jello instant pudding are also vegan-friendly, so you could make a mousse in any of those flavors just as easily. The mousse is also great for filling or topping cupcakes, or even just eating plain or parfait-style, so you can really do a lot of different things with it.

And, if you are not interested in making it vegan, just use regular milk and a tub of regular whipped topping instead, and you can use whatever flavor of instant pudding mix you want, so the possibilities are unlimited. Go crazy, this stuff is so easy and delicious.

It’s Raining Spiders and We’re Eating Butterflies

wamh1

Weird, messed-up dreams are nothing new to me. In fact, they’re kind of my specialty. Still, I’m going to assume sheer exhaustion resulted in this particularly bizarre dream, and not some subconscious desire to eat bugs because, well, no thank you.

bug1bug2

I rarely nap, but today I did and man, did my brain go bonkers. First of all, it started off like those dreams you see in horror movies where the character wakes up thinking it was all just a dream and then the killer pops up and gets them. Except in my case, I “woke up” in bed from what Dream Me thought was a nap (so a dream within a dream if you will) to see what looked like long white hairs gently falling down from the ceiling above me. Turned out those long white silky hairs were connected to baby spiders falling down from the ceiling by the hundreds. Needless to say, I lost my shit.

giphy

Untangling myself from the blankets, I sprung out of bed and ran out the door into some creepy dungeon that was covered in spider webs, egg sacs, etc. I mean, it was everywhere, to the point that I had to crawl and rip my way through it with spiders crawling all over the place. It was disgusting. 2fbf0f41eb93b1808c079b2d9da016a96752211ceed04cd00b1a3f3fb55e864e

While trying to make my way through the dungeon I saw my cat was there, too, and that she was batting at something in one of the matted spider webs: a gorgeous golden yellow butterfly. I can’t remember what Dream Me thought my mom would want with this particular butterfly, I just know that Dream Me knew she just had to have it. So I made my way through the spider-nastiness of the dungeon only to discover that in that time my cat had turned into my parents’ blind pug (not that Dream Me thought this was weird in any way, shape or form mind you.) Also, said pug was standing on a washing machine and promptly started eating the butterfly I felt my mom so desperately needed.

pug

After wrestling the butterfly free from the mouth of a hungry pug, I had my prize: one mangled butterfly covered in pug drool. Suddenly, looking down at the butterfly, Dream Me realizes the pug had the right idea, and I promptly begin eating what’s left of it, pug spit and all.

tumblr_n2whtmX78r1rfduvxo1_500.gif

Then, like we’re in an episode of Pokemon, this butterfly begins to change into a bigger, badass butterfly / Japanese Hornet hybrid (if you don’t know already what a Japanese Hornet is, feel free to google it, just don’t hit the ‘Y’ key instead of the ‘T’ key while typing ‘hornet’ and wind up with a google image spread of porn. Typo fail true story.)

7ade555aeb84768af98f2f1ceac7a374

So, yeah, while Dream Me was choking and trying to pull some insect monstrosity out of my mouth, bit by bit (because of course it’s falling apart and simultaneously trying to crawl down my throat all at once) I finally wake up from this dream. Worst. Nap. EVER.

Anywhoooo, April’s been kind of a crazy month so far. This is only my second post of the month, and It’s been hard for me to find time to hop onto WP, but I’m hoping life will regain some normalcy in May. Apologies in advance if I’m sort of flaky this month with posting and commenting. Life is hectic at the moment with the new job/new house situation. Tell me how you’re doing, though! πŸ˜€ I miss getting to chat with all you awesome people more, so I’d love to hear how you’re doing and if you’ve got anything exciting going on. Feel free to leave a link below to any cool posts of yours you feel I may have missed recently. ❀

Ignited Birthday Moth!

bday3

Woo! It’s my burfdayyyyy! πŸ˜€ Time for a birthday-cake-fueled-sugar-high that results in the mass murder of countless PiΓ±atas, opening my presents to discover that I FINALLY got that pony I’ve been asking for all these years, and of course an obnoxious amount of confetti and glitter.

Psh, I wish. πŸ˜› Nah, I’ll actually be going to work today like some lame ass adult. (When you work a Monday through Friday job, partying is reserved for the weekends.) πŸ˜‰ This past weekend my boyfriend took me out for some birthday adventures including exploring some really cool shops, going to a fantastic Irish pub for dinner and drinks, and spoiling me with prezzies and the most amazing peanut butter cheesecake with dark chocolate ganache. Yum! (Not to mention the birthday dinner and delicious homemade pistachio cake topped with pistachio mousse my family made me on Sunday.) Sooo good! I’m sorry, but eating healthy just isn’t an option when birthdays are involved.

bdaygif

Going into this new year of my life, I’m feeling really good. πŸ™‚ I have so many things to be thankful for and excited about, and I’ve got some truly amazing people in my life. ❀ Here’s to making this year just as good as last year!
