It (2017) No-Spoiler Review

stephen_kings_it_poster

Hey, guys! ❤ As promised, here is my post regarding the new film adaptation of Stephen King’s It. Please Note: There won’t be any spoilers, so any pics or gifs I post here will have already been released in the various trailers/ads. That said, let’s begin! *Cue the creepy clown music.*

Adaptations, reboots, remakes, etc can be really dividing when put to film. Especially ones concerning something like It, which traumatized so many people, either through the original novel, or Tim Curry’s portrayal of Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 1990 TV mini-series. This left some pretty big shoes to fill for the new film adaptation just recently released. (“Big shoes”, get it? Because clown shoes are big. No? Okay, then, I’ll just excuse myself and take my leave.)

Anywayyyy, getting back on track. (It’s early and I am not properly caffeinated, so please bear with me.) I really enjoyed this movie, and it surprised me in a few ways. A major surprising factor for me was just how damn funny it was. The kids that make up the legendary “Losers’ Club” were great. I was really impressed by how well all the child actors did. How many times do we see kids cast in movies who fit the bill of the adorable child, but just really can’t act? That is not a problem in this movie. Far from it, actually. Each of the young actors has talent and range that allows them to flow easily between humor and terror and back again throughout the story. Excellent casting, in my opinion. Each of the “losers” has believable chemistry with one another, and their friendship really does add to the enjoyment of this film in a major way.

Movie-Cast-2017-1024x549 And while speaking of acting, we of course cannot forget the central antagonist of the story, Pennywise, played by Bill Skarsgård. First of all, I was really happy that he and the creators of the movie chose not to try duplicating the feel of Tim Curry’s performance in the 1990 version. They went off in a different direction with the look and feel of the character, and I think that was smart. Otherwise, everyone would have just been non-stop comparing the two, and forgetting that these projects are completely separate entities revolving around the same original story. Of course they are going to be different. But when someone like Curry manages to traumatize an entire generation with his portrayal, it can be difficult for people to not expect the same of the next person to don the clown makeup.

Bill Skarsgård, I feel, did a great job with the character. As I mentioned before, I’m not particularly scared of clowns, but I really loved what he did throughout the film as Pennywise. He was interesting to watch, and the guy has a natural calling to the horror genre, as seen in this and Hemlock Grove. Plus, I love that he is an actor that chooses not to just get by on his “pretty boy” looks, which is always a plus in my book. 🙂 Go for those weird and/or challenging roles! That is what makes an actor memorable in my humble opinion.

Bill Skarsgård pre-clown makeup and the blood and tears of children.

The movie was fun to watch, and never dull or dragging. It’s more like a coming-of-age story with horror splattered in for good measure than a straight-up horror movie, and honestly, I think it made the movie all the better. And this is coming from someone who loves horror. It’s a good one to see in the theater if you can, and definitely worth watching.

Coulrophobia: the Fear of Clowns

Coulrophobia: a lengthy word that refers to the fear of clowns.

Hey, guys! ❤ Since tonight is the premier of season 7 of American Horror Story AND this Friday is when the new film adaptation of Stephen King’s It hits theaters, it seems an appropriate time to talk about clowns and how they scare the hell out of so many of us. Plus, Halloween is fast approaching, and I’m sure we’ll have many a spooky thing to discuss in the weeks to come. 😀

clowns2

Despite the many phobias I myself have, clowns are not really much of an issue for me these days. Same with dolls and ventriloquist dummies and whatnot. I know they tend to freak most people out, but I tend to be fairly indifferent to them thankfully. This, however, was not the case when I was but a wee Ignited Moth. I was very afraid of clowns. I remember going to the Fox Theatre in Detroit with my grandma in the winter and it would be so dark out and the sewer-grates would have creepy steam rising from them. I was always convinced Pennywise was down there and that he was just waiting to snatch us up.

I also have an aunt who used to keep this creepy-ass clown doll in the back seat of her car when I was younger. The thing had a mini baseball bat (no doubt for beating children to death with, because why else would a clown need a baseball bat?) But that’s about it. I never really had that lingering fear of clowns that so many people I know still do. I’m thankful for that though, because I have plenty of my own fears to keep me on edge. 😛

So, how about you? Do you (or have you ever) had a phobia of clowns? Do you remember what caused it? I’m just curious. No worries, I won’t be sending any clowns to your door or anything like that. Just wondering is all. 😉

Also, are you planning on going to see the new It movie when it opens? Or are you gonna watch this season of AHS? They’ve been teasing the hell out of clowns for this season, so that should be interesting. I know it’s supposed to have to do with this past election as well (now there’s a real horror show if I’ve ever seen one). 😛

Halloween in December: Why Not?

Procrastination is a skill of mine. I’ve pretty much mastered it over the years. Hence why I am just now getting around to posting my pumpkin I carved back in October in December.

Hey, if the retail stores insist on playing Christmas music before Halloween is even over why can’t I post Halloween pictures in December??

So tonight, on the night I am decorating the tree and beginning to wrap gifts, I present you with this Halloween’s owl pumpkin carving I did:

Tag! You’re It: Halloween Fun

Fall is in the air and Halloween is fast approaching.

pumpkins-halloween-facebook-cover

Of all the holidays, Halloween is the one that makes me feel the most festive. In the spirit of the coming holiday, I thought it would be fun to take part in this cute little survey as posted by Agatha Chocolats. (And tag my fellow Halloween-lovers to join in on the fun and do so too!) 😉

The Questions:

  1. What scent sets the holiday mood?
  2. Favorite Halloween Fun Size Candy Bar?
  3. Favorite Halloween movie?
  4. Favorite seasonal sweet?
  5. What toppings are on the perfect candy apple?
  6. What’s your favorite costume you ever wore on Halloween?
  7. Most enjoyable fall tradition?
  8. Pumpkin Patch Hayride or Haunted Hayride?
  9. What song is a must for a Halloween Party Playlist?
  10. Favorite Halloween Monster: Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.?
  11. Cider or Cocoa?
  12. Scary movies or Scaredy cat?
  13. Pumpkin Spice: Yum, or Yuck?
  14. Which is scariest: Spiders, Zombies, or Clowns?
  15. Best find in your Trick or Treat bag?
  16. Worst thing to get in your Trick or Treat bag?

My Answers:

What scent sets the holiday mood?

A few particular scents come to mind: bonfires, pumpkin spice, fresh apples, and crisp autumn air on a cool night.

Favorite Halloween Fun Size Candy Bar?

Do Reese’s cups count as a fun size candy bar? If not, Snickers (either the peanut butter kind or the almond kind).

Favorite Halloween movie?

trickrtreatdvd
Trick ‘r Treat: this movie fully encompasses the spirit and fun of Halloween. I love it and watch it every year.
picmonkey-collage-halloweeen
These are the Halloween movies I’ve been watching every year since I was a kid. I never really thought about the fact that they are all Disney movies til now.

October is also the month I indulge in my horror addiction and binge watch any horror film I can get my grubby little hands on.

Favorite seasonal sweet?

79919-autumn-meme-pumpkin-spice-all-heko-300x226
Seriously. ALL. THE. THINGS.

What toppings are on the perfect candy apple?

I’m a classic caramel apple with nuts kind of girl.

What’s your favorite costume you ever wore on Halloween?

undead-pirate-wench
Undead pirate wench costume

Most enjoyable fall tradition?

Ohhhh, this is a tough one to narrow down. I love it all: Cider mills, costume parties, bonfires, carving pumpkins, horror movie marathons, cuddle/hoodie weather, dreary days, spooky stories/legends and historical tours. Just to name a few. 😛

Pumpkin Patch Hayride or Haunted Hayride?

Haunted Hayride!

What song is a must for a Halloween Party Playlist?

Voltaire- When You’re Evil

Creature Feature- A Gorey Demise

The Ramones- Pet Sematary

The Misfits- Halloween

Voltaire- Zombie Prostitute

There are countless others, so I’m just gonna move onto the next question.

Favorite Halloween Monster: Dracula, Frankenstein, etc.?

If we’re talking classic Hollywood monsters, Frankenstein. If we’re talking just monsters in general, I love me some werewolves.

Cider or Cocoa?

Tough question. This is like asking someone if they want to keep their left foot or right foot. Both are pretty good. I guess I’ll just say cider in the fall and cocoa in the winter! 😛

Scary movies or Scaredy cat?

Scary movies. Definitely. I’ve been watching them for as long as I can remember and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. That said, make no mistakes, I am a total wuss. But with all the horror movies I’ve seen, I am that girl who hears a spooky noise and gets the nearest sharp object to wield just in case. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t sleep with a machete next to my bed. Better safe than sorry! 😉

Pumpkin Spice: Yum, or Yuck?

Yum. All the yums.

Which is scariest: Spiders, Zombies, or Clowns?

Ugh. Spiders. Eight-legged abominations that are made from nightmares and wicked intentions. Sure, they eat bugs. So do bats. Bats are cute. Spiders are horror incarnate.

Best find in your Trick or Treat bag?

Everyone else always called them “grandma candies”, but I really like those peanut butter kisses in the orange or black wrappers. It’s like peanut butter taffy, what’s not to love? That or when you’d score one of those little bags of cheetos or fruit snacks. I didn’t really care for chocolate all that much when I was a kid. (What the hell was wrong with me?)

Worst thing to get in your Trick or Treat bag?

Pencils. Sure, those little halloween-themed pencils you would get looked cool, but they never sharpened worth a damn, and when they finally did, the lead would break immediately. It was a vicious cycle of: sharpen, sharpen, sharpen, gently touch shitty pencil to paper and watch in frustration as the lead snapped, sharpen, sharpen, sharpen, and yet again watch with helpless rage as the lead broke right along with all your hopes and dreams. You’d wind up sharpening it to a pencil nubbin before you could even so much as write your damn name with it. /End Rant.

Also, any of the adorable and scrumptious looking homemade treats people would pass out. They always looked awesome and then your protective parents would always throw them right in the garbage in front of you because they might have razor blades or pins in them.

This Week’s Reading Goals

This week’s gonna be a busy one but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do to get her reading done! *Puts on determined face.*

I’m currently on page 346 of The Girl with All the Gifts, by M.R. Carey and I plan on finishing it in the next day or two. I really have enjoyed this book from the start but it did hit a little bit of a slow point in the middle that slowed me down for a while. Last night’s reading session changed that though and I’m just as invested as I was when I started reading it. I can’t wait to see how this one ends. Overall I’ve greatly enjoyed it thus far.

You can read more of my thoughts on the book here if you’re interested. 🙂

It was also recently reviewed by my #1 Partner in Crime here.

My other reading goals for the week are of the comic book variety. I recently read both volume 1 and volume 2 of the New 52 Batwoman TPBs by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman. This week I’m hoping to start and complete volume 3.

I was really looking forward to checking out the Batwoman comics for a variety of reasons, but one of the main ones goes wayyy back to Batwoman’s origins in the 1950’s. One of the supposed major reasons for her creation was to provide Bruce Wayne with a female love interest to shush all those rumors about Batman and Robin being “partners” of a vastly different nature than the crime-fighting variety. These days, Batwoman is much more than a pretty little bandage to cover up any sort of wounded hetero-masculinity that Batman and the Boy Wonder might have had circling around them. In fact, she herself is a lesbian. Times are changing and if DC really did initially create Batwoman to sweep any rumors of homosexuality under the conservative rug than I think it is a refreshing change to see her now out and not giving a damn what others think regarding her sexual orientation.

Then and Now

*Steps calmly off of soapbox*

Aaaannd now back to your regularly scheduled reading program:

So, keeping it in the Bat Family, my other intended reading goal is one that has been on my TBR list for a while: Batman: The Long Halloween, written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Time Sale. With Halloween coming fast it seems an appropriate time to read this. The art and the color scheme are pretty dark and moody which I think will go well with the story.

Happy Fall/Happy Hobbit Day!!

There’s been hints of it in the air lately, but fall is finally upon us!! 😀

screen-shot-2015-09-22-at-11-40-25-am

Fall is, without a doubt, my favorite season. The weather’s perfect, there’s the king of all holidays (I’m looking at you, Halloween, you sexy bitch!), cider and donuts, spooky activities galore, hoodies and scarves to be worn, and horror movies and books to be devoured.

Aaaaand today being September 22nd also means that it is none other than Hobbit Day!!

Hobbit Day celebrates the mutual birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, and if you don’t know who they are, you need to get yourself schooled because you’re missing out on some good shit.

These guys know how to party.

Sorry to be crass, just stating the truth.
