Deadpool 2 Review

deadpool2

Jeez, it’s been almost a week already since I went to see this movie, and my slacker ass is only just NOW writing up a review post for it. Shame, shame on me. Saturday was a day full of fun which included a friend’s birthday party hosted by none other than the fabulous Cupcakes and Machetes, A Mario Kart 64 tournament (that I won!), a trip to the hellish labyrinth full of people (and possibly a Minotaur) that is Ikea, aaaaand a morning jaunt to the movie theater to see DEADPOOL 2! πŸ˜€

Based off how much I loved the first Deadpool film it’s safe to say that I went into this one with expectations. HIGH expectations. Luckily, those expectations were nothing short of met with the second installment. I greatly enjoyed myself while watching this film. The humor, action, character interactions, cameos, etc. had me thoroughly entertained from beginning to end.

It was great getting to see Deadpool and all the other characters from the first film again, and just as great to get to see characters like Domino and Cable hit the big screen. As to be expected, there are plenty of laughs in this film. The little jabs at both Marvel and DC throughout the movie were always good for a laugh.

It’s hard to get much into the plot without venturing into spoiler territory, so we’re just going to go right ahead and dodge that bullet. As the trailer lets you know, Wade is out to protect a young boy with mutant abilities from Cable who has traveled back in time to kill said kid. Stuff ensues. If you want more info than that, go see it for yourself! πŸ˜‰

Even with all of the sexual innuendo, blood, dismemberment, swear words, violence, and all the other fun bits, Deadpool 2 has some serious heart to it. It’s a sequel that doesn’t fall into the seemingly endless cesspool of letdown follow-ups. Definitely would watch it again. πŸ™‚

So, if you haven’t gone out and seen it already, I highly suggest you hop into action and go check it out.

TBT: Old B&W Comic Fan Art

Haven’t done a Throwback Thursday art post in a while, so let’s go way the hell back and check out some of my old comic-related fan art, shall we? πŸ™‚

Up first is a piece I made specifically for a contest Roman Dirge was doing for his Lenore comics. I did not win, but it was certainly a fun drawing to do.

tbt8

Next, sticking with fan art for comics from SLG publishing, here’s a couple different characters from the comic series Gloomcookie.

Aaaaand last but not least, is Harley Quinn. I’ve been a fan of Harley for a long time, so of course she was bound to pop up here and there when I was looking through some of my older drawings. πŸ™‚

tbt7

As a TBT post would imply, these are all pretty old drawings, but I personally enjoy looking back on the old stuff, flaws and all, just to remember what I enjoyed drawing at that point in my life and to see how my style has changed and evolved over the years. πŸ™‚ All of these were done with pencil, pen, and sharpie, my old go-to tools of the trade!

Book/Comic-Related Christmas Haul

Brrr! All of the people wishing for a “White Christmas” certainly got their wish here in Michigan. (What were you lunatics thinking?!) πŸ˜› I just got in from shoveling a bunch of snow and am chilled to the bone. Thankfully, hot chocolate with butterscotch schnapps mixed in is a thing. πŸ˜‰ It’s soooo good and soooo warm. I’m in a state of total bliss now as I thaw out.

I hope all of you enjoyed the holidays with your loved ones and had a wonderful time. ❀ (And maybe even gave and got some awesome prezzies!) πŸ˜› Christmas certainly is NOT all about the presents, but this post sure as heck is gonna be. πŸ˜‰ I was too excited about some of the fantastic gifts I got this Christmas not to want to share them.Β  and Let’s start this post off by talking about my favorite gift I unwrapped this year:

Xmas Gift from Chris1

I have been coveting these particular Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland vintage artwork ornaments for YEARS. Seriously, years. My dream is to one day decorate my Christmas tree in all literature-themed ornaments and decorations, and these fit the theme so perfectly. Needless to say, I was beyond elated to get them as one of my gifts from my boyfriend. He ended up spoiling me rotten, but these were my favorite of the gifts he got me for sentimental reasons. ❀

Xmas Gift from Chris2

Okay, enough being mushy, let’s move on and talk about COMICS! πŸ˜€ I got some graphic novels I am very excited to read. First, we have the first three volumes of the manga series The Girl from the Other Side. I’d been seeing artwork for this series floating around and absolutely loved what I saw, but I had no idea it was an actual manga series until I read a review on volume 1 from the Random Melon Reads blog. I can’t wait to learn more about this story. Here’s a tidbit about it from Goodreads:

“In a land far away, there were two kingdoms: the Outside, where twisted beasts roamed that could curse with a touch, and the Inside, where humans lived in safety and peace. The girl and the beast should never have met, but when they do, a quiet fairytale begins. This is a story of two people–one human, one inhuman–who linger in the hazy twilight that separates night from day.”

Xmas Gift from Chris3

Next, we have some more mainstream goodies starring some of my fave DC leading ladies! πŸ˜€ I’ve heard really good things about Batwoman: Rebirth, and I’m looking forward to continuing the Bombshells series with volumes 3 and 4. Volume 2 had a definite lack of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy so I’m pumped to see them right on the cover in the thick of the action for volume 3.

Xmas Gift from Chris6

Speaking of continuing series I’ve already started, I’m looking forward to seeing what shenanigans the girls from Giant Days get up to in volumes 4 and 5. I’m also thrilled to report that Cupcakes and Machetes has gotten into this comic recently as well. It’s always fun getting to talk to friends about comics and books and whatnot. πŸ™‚

Xmas Gift from Chris5.JPG

And on the topic of awesome female-centered comics I like to enjoy with my friends, I also now get to enjoy volumes 2, 3, and 4 of Rat Queens! I didn’t shy away from expressing my love for this series when I reviewed volume 1 back in March, so you can imagine how giddy I was to receive more of this series. It isn’t every comic I give a rating of “Five out of five flaming orc skulls.” πŸ˜‰

Xmas Gift from Chris4.JPG

I got some other awesome non-comic or book related gifties, but the last I want to share with you guys is this awesome shark mug and shark snack bowl duo. It’s no secret that I love me some sharks, so I was pretty pumped about these. Especially because I’m also a fan of coffee mugs. And snacks. πŸ˜›

Xmas Gift from Chris7

Did you have a lovely Christmas this year? What was your favorite present you gave and/or received? Are you glad the holiday chaos is finally over?? πŸ˜›

Oh! And because a couple of you asked to see it, here’s a pic of my R2-D2 Christmas sweater I got this year. πŸ™‚

Nimona (No-Spoiler) Review

19351043

I’d heard good things regarding the graphic novel Nimona by Noelle Stevenson, and I did not feel let down one bit upon reading it. The story was so sassy, cute and fun. I really enjoyed the characters, and how the story developed from humble beginnings to an increasingly dramatic plot with ever-growing stakes.

Here’s the description from Goodreads:

Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.
But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

I think this story would definitely be of interest to people who enjoyed the cartoon Adventure Time. It has that same sort of charm in my opinion, all while doing its own thing. Definitely worth checking out, in my opinion!

Past Pumpkin Carvings

Like many other Halloween fiends, I love carving pumpkins this time of year. So I thought I’d share some of the pumpkins I’ve carved from years gone by with you guys. Above is my Jack Skellington pumpkin I carved.

boo_pumpkin_by_thepoisoncrumpet-d81ouk1

I love so many of the baddies from the Super Mario games, so above is my Boo pumpkin and below is my goomba one. One of these days I’d like to take a stab (heh) at a shy guy pumpkin carving, too.

goomba_pumpkin_by_thepoisoncrumpet-d82o212

I’ve got a thing for carving video game characters apparently, because here’s my Super Meat Boy pumpkin carving. It was the first time I shaved the skin out of the pumpkin rather than just carving chunks out, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out. Even if it did take forever to do. πŸ˜›

And like my other The Nightmare Before Christmas pumpkin pictured at the top of this post, I of course had to do an Oogie Boogie one. πŸ˜›

Last year’s pumpkin carving was an owl. Originally I had wanted to try the pumpkin shaving thing again but then I remembered how insanely time consuming it had been and quickly abandoned the idea. Hence the random shaved off bits on the owl. lol

Are you planning on carving or painting any pumpkins this year? What are you thinking of making? πŸ™‚

Review- DC Bombshells, Vol. 2: Allies

Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s been nearly five months since I finished readingΒ Volume 1 of DC Comics Bombshells! I absolutely loved the first volume so I was pretty excited to finally get around to reading the second volume.

dcb1

You know how sometimes you read something and it just really resonates with what is going on in the world around you? I definitely had this feeling while continuing the Bombshells’ saga. Between the current political climate and a particularly frustrating 48 hours where I had not one, not even two or three, but FOUR personal reminders of the importance of feminism, I was more than ready to see these female heroes kick some Nazi and misogynistic asses. πŸ˜›

dcb6

Volume 2 takes us all over the globe to locations like Berlin, London, and Greece as WWII continues to rage on. Even on the home front in Gotham City, tensions rise and danger looms. One thing I really like about DC Bombshells is that it touches on both soldier and civilian life during the war. No one goes unaffected by the horror going on in the world.

dcb4

As if the Axis Powers weren’t enough to contend with, a sinister supernatural influence continues to grow in power, bringing a horde of undead soldiers with it.

dcb2

The art continues to stun in this volume and the characters are fantastic. (Batwoman is still, of course, my fave!) Strong female relationships aplenty in these pages, both platonic and romantic alike. Also, just strong, kick ass females in general. The characters are believable with their own motivations, insecurities, weaknesses and strengths.

dcb10

The biggest bummer for me was that I was missing my girls, Harley and Ivy in this one. They were nowhere to be seen in volume 2. *Proceeds to pout in the corner.*

But, hey, at least we get more of Zatanna and Bunny Constantine!

dcb8

All in all, I really enjoyed volume 2. I think I enjoyed volume 1 a little bit more, but I’m still looking forward to reading the third volume very much.

Birthday Comic Haul!

So this Monday is my birthday and thus this weekend was spent celebrating with (and getting spoiled by) my friends, boyfriend (and his family), and my own family. ❀

I definitely felt the love!

Since I review comics here from time to time I figured I would specifically share with you guys the comics I received and plan to read and review in the near future.

Monstress, Volume 1: Awakening

I have heard SO MANY good things about Monstress. The artwork inside is absolutely gorgeous and I cannot wait to read this one.

DC Comics: Bombshells, Volume 2: Allies

Those of you who have already read my review of volume 1 know just how much I enjoyed it and have been looking forward to getting my paws on volume 2.

Spider-Gwen, Volume 0 and Volume 1

I’ve been curious aboutΒ this series that explores what would have happened if Gwen Stacy had been bitten by the radioactive arachnid instead of Peter Parker. Now I’ll get to see for myself, and unlike the mistake I made when reading the New 52 Batwoman TPBs, I won’t make the mistake of starting with volume 1 when there is a volume 0 to be read first! πŸ˜‰

Rat Queens, Volume 1: Sass & Sorcery

Like Monstress, this is anotherΒ series I’ve heard several good things about. I mean, the comic is literally described as being a modern “violent monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack!” Sounds good to me! πŸ˜›

So, what about you guys? Any comics you’re reading, excited to read, or have just recently read that you’d like to share your thoughts on? Feel free to comment below with your latest adventures in reading!
